Turns out Kobe Bryant isn’t the only NBA 2K24 cover athlete this year

Basketball game developer 2K has confirmed the exclusive NBA 2K24 WNBA Edition cover athlete alongside pre-order information for players on PS5, Xbox, and PC.

If you’re looking forward to taking to the court in one of 2K’s upcoming PS5 gamesNBA 2K24, you might be interested to learn that it looks like the late Kobe Bryant isn’t going to be the only NBA 2K24 cover athlete this year. Like last year, and the year before that, 2K is releasing a special NBA 2K24 WNBA Edition in North American territories and we now know who the WNBA Edition cover athlete is this year.

Ahead of the NBA 2K24 release date, and to kick-off the start of NBA 2K24 pre-orders, 2K revealed that New York Liberty point guard Sabrina Ionescu is the latest WNBA Edition cover athlete. She’s just the fourth WNBA star to don the cover of an NBA 2K game, joining Candace Parker (Chicago Sky, 2K22), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury, 2K23), and Sue Bird (Seattle Storm, 2K23).

If you want to check out the cover for yourself, you can below. It’s also worth noting that the WNBA Edition of NBA 2K24 is currently only available in physical copies of the game in North American territories.

Ionescu is, at the time of writing, the all-time NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) leader in career triple-doubles – a feat only a handful of players, male and female, have been able to achieve at all. With 26 logged triple-doubles between 2016 and 2020, before her ascension to the WNBA, she has more than double the current men’s leader and 20 more than the iconic Shaquille O’Neal.

To add to this impressive feat, she became the youngest player in WNBA history to record a triple-double in May 2021. Then, in July 2022, she was able to record the first 30-point triple-double in WNBA history. To say that she doesn’t deserve to be WNBA Edition cover star would be a lie, and we don’t think this will be the last time we see her on the cover of a WNBA Edition either at only 25 years of age.

She was also the WNBA Draft’s first overall pick in 2020 and won a gold medal at 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup. Oh, and she also made it onto the Forbes 30 under 30 list for Sports in November 2022. Yeah, an appearance on an NBA game cover was inevitable, wasn’t it?

Is NBA 2K24 going to be one of the best PS5 games you play this year? Hard to say, but it’s certainly shaping up to be one of the best Xbox games out there when it comes to sports games. However, only time will tell. We should find out more about how 2K has improved upon the game soon, though. We already know NBA 2K24 Mamba Moments is coming – and that sounds like a lot of fun.
