Fighting game fans are living their best lives in 2023, with titles such as Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Project L set to delight avid brawlers. However, it wouldn’t right be if one of the genre’s most beloved franchises didn’t share that limelight too. A Mortal Kombat 12 reveal could be on the cards soon, as rumours signal that developer NetherRealm Studios is nearly ready to reveal the next era in the franchise.

In a series of rumours regarding Mortal Kombat 12 and a potential PlayStation Showcase, Xbox Era Podcast co-host Nick ‘Shepshal’ Baker claims that the next NetherRealm fight could be seen soon: “The original DM I got [about the PlayStation Showcase] mentioned when it’s supposed to be happening and I didn’t wanna say anything, but now that others have it I feel much better […] but I remember how I said a while back[..] there’s a big third-party game that’s supposed to be at that showcase.”

While Baker is hesitant to name the title in case Sony becomes aware and pulls the title from the showcase, he does ultimately “take the gamble” and claims that “Mortal Kombat 12 is supposed to be there.” Baker speculates that it is possible that Sony has bartered with NetherRealm Studios for “marketing rights” on the new title, giving credence to why MK12 would be featured alongside other PS5 prospects.

Alongside Baker’s claims, GiantBomb’s Jeff Grubb purports that “the PlayStation Showcase, still hear that’s coming. I would probably safely say that’s May at this point. In general, I’m gonna say before Summer Game Fest because that’s the safest way of doing it.” With Summer Game Fest set to happen on June 8, 2023, Grubb also says that it is likely to be “May, maybe very, very early June. That seems like the right time to get that PlayStation Showcase.”

Responding to YouTuber Maximillian Miles Christensen’s enthusiastic tweets about a new MK game, known leaker Jez Corden teases that the content creator could get a new glimpse at Mortal Kombat 12 in May too: “I think you’ll find out more next month.” Should the reveal take place as speculated, it is likely that more details about the Mortal Kombat 12 release date will be shared with fans.

The last entry in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, was released for PlayStation and Xbox consoles back in 2019. Featuring familiar characters within the game’s roster, subsequence DLCs added pop-culture icons such as John Rambo, The Terminator, Robocop, and The Joker. Talk about putting a smile on your face. Mortal Kombat titles are often regarded as some of the best games in the fighting genre, so make sure to keep all the upcoming PS5 games noted down.
