Is Marathon a battle royale? Battle royales have been all the rage for a while now, and with the reveal of Bungie’s next game, Marathon, the question of whether it’s a battle royale has cropped up. Luckily, you’re in the right place to find out whether you should expect a Marathon battle royale experience.

Announced at the PlayStation Showcase 2023, we’ve already got some interesting details about Marathon, including what type of game we can expect. Unfortunately, Bungie stated in the Marathon ViDoc that we likely won’t be hearing much more about the game until closer to the Marathon release date. Nevertheless, we do know about the Marathon’s genre and gameplay.

Is Marathon a battle royale?

No, Marathon is not a battle royale. Rather, Marathon is an extraction shooter, involving players fighting for survival while also completing an objective and escaping alive. This was confirmed by the official Marathon website.

While we’re yet to see any gameplay, you can expect Marathon to play more like Hunt Showdown or Escape from Tarkov than something like Fortnite or Apex Legends. Players will still fight for survival against each other, but it is not necessarily a fight to the death to win in extraction games. There are typically other objectives to complete that can also net victory, and players also usually need to escape alive to keep their scavenged equipment for another run.

In the Marathon ViDoc, Bungie stated there are multiple ways to win, though extracting with the most artifacts is the main goal. Unlike a battle royale where you’re required to eliminate the opposition to win, in Marathon you will be able to eliminate opponents, find and extract with artifacts, or even just flee to stay alive. Like with most extraction shooters, it sounds as though your looted equipment or upgrades will persist into your next run if you manage to escape alive.

Nevertheless, you’ll definitely be on your toes, weapon ready in Marathon. With players and AI opponents to watch out for, as well as loot to find and objectives to complete, there’s certainly a lot to keep in mind.
