League of Legends patch 13.8 makes conservative tweaks as MSI looms

While LoL patch 13.8 won't be making major waves in the League of Legends meta, developer Riot Games hopes it will do just enough to tighten it up ahead of MSI.

The 2023 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitation is upon us, and developer Riot Games has spent the last few of the MOBA game’s patches tightening up the meta ahead of this year’s tournament – and LoL patch 13.8 is no exception.

While this patch cycle isn’t filled with changes that will dramatically shake up League’s meta, Summoner’s Rift team lead Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison says the studio was reluctant to take “large swings” that would inevitably lead to champions which would dominate the LoL ranks at MSI.

With that said there are further tweaks in the jungle, following nerfs to the likes of Lee Sin, Sejuani, and Vi back on patch 13.7. Kha’Zix, Lillia, and Nidalee will all enjoy small buffs when the patch goes live, while Jarvan IV and Kayn’s shadow form will be nerfed.

Marksmen Ezreal and Kog’Maw are also receiving some love. While Ezreal’s two AD buff isn’t particularly glamorous, the damage adds up over the course of a game. The Mouth of the Abyss, on the other hand, is gaining more passive damage and a lower cooldown on his Q, as well as a mana cost reduction and slow increase on his E.

On the items front, Cosmic Drive is being reworked. Now, rather than having to dump an entire rotation of spells into a target to get the AP boost, Phroxzon says it will start stacking after the first damage instance is dealt, and after a short delay the second damage instance will fully stack it.
