Knights of The Old Republic Remake Release Date latest news
The Knights of the Old Republic Remake has dipped in and out of the news cycle over the past few years, though it’s seemingly barely gotten out of the starting blocks since being passed over to Saber Interactive.
The most recent update we have on the game came courtesy of an IGN interview with Saber CEO Matthew Karch back in April 2024. “It’s clear and it’s obvious that we’re working on this,” he told the publication. “It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”
Prior to Karch’s interview, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors indicated that we’d be waiting beyond April 2025 at the earliest for the game. Embracer – Saber’s former parent company – is set to retain control over “a previously announced AAA game based on a major license.”
Investors assumed this was KOTOR, querying Wingefors if it would be released within the next 12 months. Though he didn’t confirm if it was KOTOR, he did have the following to say about this mystery AAA game’s timescale:
“I think that kind of game needs some deep love and respect, so without giving full color, I think it’s some time left until that is released.” So, if KOTOR is still an Embracer-published, Saber-developed type beat, don’t expect it anytime soon.
Having been rescued by Saber during its divorce from Embracer in March 2024, the KOTOR remake is very lucky to still be in development. This isn’t the first time it’s dodged a bullet, though.
Originally it seemed like a 2023 or 2024 launch was possible for KOTOR while it was still in development under Aspyr. After all, it was announced back in 2021 after having already been in the works for three years. However, the project was put on pause back in July 2022 after the firm fired the game’s art director, Jason Minor, and design director Brad Prince abruptly.
This news came from Bloomberg, which further reported that the decision was made after a vertical slice and gameplay demo was shown to Sony and Lucasfilm on June 30. Although the developers felt “excited about it,” studio top dogs reportedly said that the slice “wasn’t where they wanted it to be and that the project would be passed.” As we know now, Saber took over the development of the game.
Knights of the Old Republic Remake platforms
The KOTOR Remake will initially launch as a PS5 exclusive – at least on the console front. This was confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post accompanying the 2021 reveal trailer.
There hasn’t been an announcement of a Knights of the Old Republic Remake Xbox release yet, but if it does come to Xbox Series X|S, the game will likely be announced after its initial release on other platforms.
