Some Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trial solutions will require select spells, so it’s worth knowing how to unlock all spells in Hogwarts Legacy if you find yourself unable to solve a Merlin Trial. It’s also good to know the Hogwarts Legacy best spells so you can take down the biggest foes in the game. We’ve completed several Merlin Trials in our playthrough for our Hogwarts Legacy review.

Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trials explained

Merlin Trials are environmental puzzles found around the Hogwarts Legacy map, marked by a leaf icon in-game, and are the only way to increase inventory space.

To gain access to the Merlin Trial activities, you’ll first need to have completed the Trials of Merlin main quest. This quest sees you assisting Nora Treadwell with unlocking the secrets of Merlin’s magical trials to further her research. ‘WoW Quests’ has a video covering the quest, as featured above.

While all Merlin Trials require Mallowsweet Leaves to start, certain Trials will also require later game spells to successfully solve, such as Depulso or Confringo. Mallowsweet can be bought from Hogwarts Legacy The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade or grown either in Professor’s Garlick’s Herbology room or the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement.

Remember, you can often use Revelio to find the interactable objects involved in the Merlin Trial in the vicinity.

Light three braziers solution and answer

To solve this Merlin Trial variation, you’ll need to light three braziers located around the area in quick succession using Confringo or Incendio.

  • Requires Incendio and Confringo for harder variations

They’re often spread out or in hard to reach spaces, so keep your eyes peeled. Once a brazier is lit, it will begin to sink into the ground to convey a timer. To solve this Merlin Trial, think carefully about the order you light the fires in, and use Confringo if you have it to activate braziers from longer ranges.

Large stone ball solution and answer

This Merlin Trial solution involves rolling the large stone ball into the bowl-like platform in the ground using Depulso.

  • Requires Depulso

Since the stone balls are heavy objects, you’ll often be tasked with rolling them down a hill rather than up a slope, so check higher elevations to find the ball. These Merlin Trials can take a lot of trial and error, and frequent readjustments to make sure the ball is on the right course.

Stack small stone balls solution and answer

To solve this Merlin Trial, you’ll have to stack a set of small stone balls on special platforms with four indentations using Accio.

  • Requires Accio

There are three platforms to find around the Merlin Trial so you’ll have to repeat the process.

Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trials: One of the stone slabs you have to break, featuring the green glowing 'lights' and cracks.

Break stone slabs solution and answer

Solving this Merlin Trial variation involves breaking large stone slabs using the explosive Confringo spell.

  • Requires Confringo

You’ll know you’ve found the relevant stone slabs by their unique green ‘lights’ and cracked appearance.

Hogwarts Legacy Merlin Trials: An example of one of the many parkour Merlin Trial challenges.

Parkour obstacle course solution and answer

To solve this Merlin Trial you’ll need only your best parkour shoes as you’ll need to complete a jumping puzzle obstacle course. You’ll notice a series of raised platforms arranged in a line and you’ll need to jump your way to the finishing line without falling off. If you fall off, simply return to the start and try again. Who knew expert wizards were also meant to be adept at parkour.

Stone globe statues solution and answer

Solving this Merlin Trial simply involves shooting at the stone globes on top of the columns using your Basic Cast.

  • Requires Basic Cast

These stone globe statues are usually found in groups of three in proximity to the Merlin Trial statue that marks the challenge, though some can be hard to find. If you’re struggling to find the totems, remember that you can use Revelio to highlight interactable objects.

Moth stone slabs solution and answer

This Merlin Trial solution tasks you with guiding glowing moths to a stone slab using Lumos, similar to the open-world puzzle involving guiding moths to the painting frames. You can identify the stone slabs by their distinct green ‘lights’ and gold engravings.

  • Requires Lumos

Finding the stone slabs is the easy part, but finding the moths can sometimes be quite the challenge if they are further away or well hidden. Remember that Revelio is your friend.

Repair wizard statues solution and answer

To solve this Merlin Trial, all you’ll need to do is use Reparo on the broken wizard statues.

  • Requires Reparo

You can locate the stone wizard statues using Revelio.

Puzzle block totems solution and answer

Solving this Merlin Trial will require you to rotate the stone block on each totem using Flipendo to match the symbols. Keep an eye on the arrows pointing down on certain symbols, as these are the ones to match.

  • Requires Flipendo

Completing this Merlin Trial can be a little finicky given the controls, so take your time and position yourself accordingly to rotate the block in the desired direction.

Hogwarts Legacy has drawn considerable criticism during its development, largely due to the fact that the creator of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, has made a number of transphobic remarks on social media in recent years.

While Avalanche has confirmed that J.K. Rowling is not “directly involved” in the development of Hogwarts Legacy, it is working with “her team” and Portkey Games, a Warner Bros. label dedicated to launching new experiences inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original stories. It is currently unclear whether she will earn any royalties from the game’s sale, but it is likely given it is based on her original body of work.
