Helldivers 2 dev reveals “wild idea” that needs to happen right now

Amping up the chaos even more, a Helldivers 2 raid mode “would be amazing”, according to Arrowhead’s CEO, but it’s a long road to get there.

With its servers overflowing, Helldivers 2 has been off to a roaring start. Plus, the game is only going to get better over time thanks to its slate of free updates. However, it would be even better with large-team raid content, and it seems developer Arrowhead is in agreement. The studio’s head honcho has confirmed that this “wild idea” has been considered for future content on PS5.

When asked about multi-squad raids, Johan Pilestedt, Helldivers 2 creative director and Arrowhead CEO, claims: “It actually exists in the ‘wild ideas but probably too hard to do’ section of future content”. That’s right, the hottest PS5 exclusive right now could be seeing large groups of Helldivers joining forces for epic missions in the future.

Despite agreeing that raids would be an amazing inclusion, Pilestedt goes on to explain that making this dream game mode a reality “comes down to network traffic and assumptions in regards to how the game is built”. In other words, the PS5 bug-slayer isn’t set up for such an ambitious mode, at least right now. In fact, the Helldivers 2 developer was in “crisis mode” at launch due to server issues.

Nevertheless, a multi-group raid feature has certainly been discussed among the team. Taking notes from many of the best co-op games, perhaps most notably Destiny 2, a Helldivers raid mode would work wonders. With you already being able to see other players’ ships in orbit and the variety of explosive Stratagems raining down in the distance, we already get a taste of what such an epic mode would feel like – now we just need our dreams to come true.

In another response on Twitter, Pilestedt teases that further customization could be coming in the future, expressing that Arrowhead “don’t like that there’s no weapon customization”. Though it’s undoubtedly a lower priority than fixing the Helldivers 2 servers, especially around launch as the game is skyrocketing, it would certainly be a popular new feature.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait and cross our fingers for a Helldivers 2 raid mode, though there’s already lots of fun to be had in the new PS5 game.
