Grand Theft Auto fans have been scanning the web for news about the upcoming GTA 5 next-gen upgrade, but they got more than they bargained for in today’s update. Tucked away on an update about the upgrade, which has finally been given a release date, is the news that GTA 6 is in active development.

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” Rockstar says in the blog, which you can read here. “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”

As expected, no more details have been shared and all we can do is speculate about what might come from this new entry. Could we see the return of a beloved setting? Could the game only come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S? Well, we will have to wait till the GTA 6 release date is announced to get a good idea.

For now though, Rockstar continues to apply the finishing touches on the GTA 5 upgrade, which will bring a whole host of visual and performance upgrades to the game.

It’s an exciting time to be a GTA fan – and with confirmation that GTA 6 is in the works – fans can enjoy GTA 5’s final chapter.
