GTA 6 will look “incredible” on PS5 and Xbox, claims ex-Rockstar dev

Amid the release of the GTA 6 trailer, concerns purport it won't look as impressive on PS5 and Xbox. This ex-Rockstar dev claims otherwise.

GTA 6 PS5 Xbox graphics

The GTA 6 trailer is merely a few days old now, but debate around the next Rockstar Games open world extravaganza is already ripe with fiery takes. We have all come to expect a certain degree from the GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 developer over the years, and despite a solid debut for GTA 6 in the first trailer, concerns are amounting whether it can deliver this level of graphical sheen. Well, one person is in the best place to affirm how good the GTA 6 graphics will be, because they’re a former Rockstar Games dev.

We’re all waiting for the GTA 6 release date to arrive, but we’ve got plenty of time to scrub every frame of the GTA 6 trailer until then. That’s why former Rockstar Games animator Mike York is doing on his YouTube channel, sharing his expertise having worked on GTA 5 at Rockstar New England. York expresses that “I’m really impressed with how far they’re bringing the graphics in-game. A lot of times you see a cinematic; this is not that.”

“Look at the beach. It’s funny, it’s very unique […] when you play this game, it’s really going to look like this. It’s going to look just like this. It’s going to be incredible,” says York. Commenting on the resources and talent that Rockstar Games has available, York says that “the artists over there really know how to push the consoles and the hardware to the limit […] they’re pushing the limits right now for this game on PS5.”

Immediately, the trailer’s visual sheen is apparent, displaying astounding levels of detail and fidelity. Whether you’re a fan of one of the best open world game franchises around, there is no denying that Rockstar Games is aiming to double down on the immersion that Red Dead Redemption 2 and other titles in their repertoire have captured in the past.

Though, GTA fans on Reddit aren’t as convinced. ‘Emergency-Fall-580‘ says that “I think Jason’s face looks super detailed, but I was hoping for more detailed skin overall. I think a lot of the people’s skin look like a barbie doll.” Another fan, ‘CrtlAltDlt’ adds that the trailer contains “emotionless faces. As in, lack of cheek/eye movement [and] certain animations look kind of janky.” However, there is an entire year left before GTA 6 ships, and we’re confident that this trailer is already a good omen for the final result.

We’re especially looking forward to Rockstar Games giving Vice City an overhaul, considering how expansive the HD Universe iterations of Liberty City and San Andreas are, respectively. We just hope that they keep the Malibu Club in Vice City, as it is easily one of, if not the most iconic spot in the Miami-inspired locale.

For now, you can check out all the new PS5 games and new Xbox games on the horizon, but the Vice City beach won’t be on your doorstep just yet.
