Do keep in mind that there are major story spoilers below. So, if you are keen to play through the game and experience some of these new tools, we highly suggest not reading any further and saving yourself the surprises for when you reach them. But, if you just want to skip past that and get a look, read on below.

God of War Ragnarok new weapons

God of War Ragnarok has five new weapons, with one brand new weapon type and four different shields that are new for this game. The weapons are:

  • Draupnir Spear
  • Onslaught Shield
  • Shatter Star Shield
  • Dauntless Shield
  • Stone Wall Shield

Below, you can find a more in-depth overview of all five of these weapons, including their skills, strengths, abilities, and more.

God of War Ragnarok New Weapons: Kratos can be seen holding the Draupnir Spear

Draupnir Spear

The Draupnir Spear is the only actually new physical weapon in the game with its own unique moveset and abilities. The Draupnir Spear is unlocked during the Forging Destiny quest at the start of the third act of the game.

After you visit the Lady of the Forge, you and Brok will obtain the Spear from her. The Spear is built as a stun-focused weapon. Its attacks and skills’ strengths are all about building up your foes’ stun meters and then allowing you to rush in for a finishing move. The Spear also has the most ammo when it comes to long-range attacks, in that you can throw multiple spears and then have them explode where they landed.

However, when it comes to regular damage, the Draupnir Spear does not do as much as the Leviathon Axe or the Blades of Chaos do. It also doesn’t do any elemental damage, so your playstyle with the weapon really needs to fit around building up your enemies’ stun meters. It is able to draw elemental damage from enemies, giving it that element for a brief window, but it requires some skill to use.

God of War Ragnarok New Weapons: The Onslaught Shield can be seen

Onslaught Shield

A mobility-focused tank option, the Onslaught Shield comes with the ability to rush forward towards an enemy, blocking incoming attacks. It is not built as a parry-focused shield and is instead an offensive-defensive option.

As such, it should be used when the time calls for it and you can either knock and enemy off a ledge or distract them as you focus on others within the group.

God of War Ragnarok New Weapons: The Shatter Star Shield can be seen

Shatter Star Shield

The Shatter Star Shield is a long-range version of the shield. Acting like the Dauntless shield and being a high-risk, high-reward option. Instead of the usual parry, if you double tap L1, you will perform a shield punch which blows enemies backwards.

This ability helps with crowd control and keeping large groups of enemies at bay. It can also be charged and absorb attacks if a shield punch is performed right as an attack hits you.

God of War Ragnarok New Weapons: The Dauntless Shield can be seen

Dauntless Shield

The Dauntless Shield is a fast-paced, lightweight shield built for parrying. There are a lot of high-risk, high-reward parry opportunities with the shield as you can leave enemies stunned for longer.

But, being able to pull off these parries is not an easy task and you will need to really hone your timing to make this shield worth using. It is probably the highest skill-level shield in the game and not one for beginners.

God of War Ragnarok New Weapons: The Stone Wall Shield can be seen

Stone Wall Shield

The Stone Wall Shield is the fourth shield in this list and the final one. It is built for absorbing attacks and then striking back with the shield. While not built for parrying, if you sit behind it and absorb an attack, you can double-tap the L1 button to shield slam.

This attack launches enemies when fully charged as you slam your shield into the ground. As mentioned the shield is not built for a faster playstyle but is better for someone who likes to sit behind it and attack large groups of enemies with big attacks.

As you can see the four new shields and the Draupnir Spear help add a fairly wide variety of attacks and playstyles to God of War Ragnarok which was a somewhat big criticism in the 2018 game. With these God of War Ragnarok new weapons, you can help determine how you want to play the game and the style that best suits you as you traverse the Realms.
