Say hello to another batch of fan-favorite POIs, items and weapons as Fortnite downtime is over in the Epic Games battle royale. Continuing with the nostalgic theme of Fortnite OG, the latest update unvaults a few familiar Fortnite guns, but that doesn’t mean that all of them are good. In fact, the new update reintroduces an assault rifle that you’d be better off leaving behind.
You can dive back into Fortnite now, as Epic Games is opening the servers back following a recent spell of Fortnite downtime to prepare for the latest update. Sadly, that does mean that the Drum Gun is now back in rotation. Now, you might have fond memories of this assault rifle from back in the day, but the weapon just isn’t it. Despite the gun’s classification as an assault rifle, it is exceptionally poor at range. Fortnite might be one of the best battle royale games to date, but it has put some out some heinous weapons over the years.
The Drum Gun also lacked First Shot Accuracy when it debuted, a common feature amid the game’s current weapon pool. Instead, you’ll have found that the Drum Gun fires random spreads, rather than lean and efficient groups of bullets. If you’re unfamiliar with the mechanic, essentially it means you can hit accurate shots by standing still, lining up the reticle and tapping the fire button. You’ll have seen this applied to other weapons, often in the assault rifle weapon family.
It last appeared in Chapter 2 Season 3, and was nerfed once more, despite having its magazine size and fire rate reduced in Season 9 back in May 2019. However, with the game transitioning to Unreal Engine 5 and vast improvements enhancing combat/movement, we’re willing to give the Drum Gun another shot. Alongside the Drum Gun, the current Fortnite update also brings back the Dual Pistols, Combat Shotgun, Silent Sniper, Flint-Knock, Minigun, Quad Launcher and Tac SMG.
There’s plenty of fun to be had with the Dual Pistols and the Quad Launcher, especially as you’ll be able to wield them while getting onboard planes, which also find their way back to Fortnite in this update.
The X-4 Stormwing, commonly referred to as the ‘plane’, was present in the game back in December 2018, so this is a great full circle moment as we approach the holiday season. Able to carry up to 5 players, this vehicle is perfect for causing chaos, or using the latest Fortnite ICON Series skin with. Even if the Drum Gun is still a bit rubbish, you can still count on Fortnite to be one of the best multiplayer games on PS5 and Xbox.
