As we approach the next Ubisoft Forward presentation on June 10, 2024, speculation around Far Cry 7 is ramping up. Where will we go next? Who will we meet? Well, recent rumors claim that Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy will star in the game, but it might just be a red herring for something even wilder.
In recent social media posts from prolific Ubisoft leaker ‘xj0nathan’, the first post depicts a cryptic collation of images, including dynamite, a giant crab, the number seven, and an image of Cillian Murphy. The dynamite itself sports a timer indicating that 72 hours are on the clock, potentially hinting that an announcement is 72 hours away – or at least part of the open world game‘s plot. However, it is Murphy’s possible involvement with the new PS5 game and new Xbox game that has us intrigued.
However, in a follow-up post, the leaker says “mind you, I NEVER said Cillian Murphy was going to be in the game. The image means something else.” Rumored plot details from an Insider Gaming report allege that Far Cry 7 will revolve around a non-linear narrative, where the player must rescue the protagonist’s family within 72 hours. The game would unfold in 24 hours of real-time gameplay, with safe houses acting as a way to pause the clock.
It is understood that the forthcoming action RPG game will transition from away from the Dunia engine, and onto the Snowdrop engine – the same as Ubisoft’s free-to-play multiplayer shooter, XDefiant. Speculatively, we reckon that the upcoming Ubisoft Forward showcase is where we’ll see Far Cry 7 first. It’d certainly be interesting to see Murphy involved with the project, but it doesn’t seem likely.
Murphy has only two videogame credits to his name, in the form of the Batman Begins tie-in game and VR title Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom. The actor is famously known for his reluctance to join social media, with Murphy appearing to learn what memes are in a now-viral clip. That’s just wholesome.
Following his recent Academy Award win, Murphy is higher demand than ever, but could his schedule really allow him to star in Far Cry 7? The Far Cry series no stranger to including Hollywood talent, as previous entries into the franchise have included Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Trejo, and The Last of Us legend Troy Baker.
