PS5 heist shooter Fairgames still “on track” according to new job ad

A new PlayStation job listing for Fairgames indicates that development for the PS5 shooter is proceeding smoothly, and that’s great news for Sony.

Haven Studios has indirectly offered a promising update on its upcoming live-service heist shooter, Fairgames. The PlayStation studio has expressed that it is “on track” to deliver its new PS5 multiplayer offering as part of a new job ad for a ‘monetization and self-expression’ producer.

“Our first new IP for PlayStation is on track to deliver a triple-A multiplayer experience,” the job description posted to PlayStation’s greenhouse board reads. The new PS5 game’s studio further shares its hopes to “build a systemic and evolving world focused on freedom, thrill, and playfulness that will keep players entertained and engaged for years.”

Having initially been revealed with a glitzy CGI trailer at last year’s May PlayStation showcase, Fairgames has very much remained on my radar. Though Payday 3 didn’t quite scratch our feisty, heisty itch, Haven’s multiplayer game could come in clutch when it does eventually arrive. I’m especially hopeful we’ll get a new look at it as part of Sony’s next PlayStation showcase – whenever that will be.

The success of Fairgames is also crucial to Sony’s long-term live-service strategy, which has already had its peaks and troughs. Having committed to launching a slew of GaaS titles by next year, this has so far been underpinned by the rip-roaring success of Arrowhead’s democracy-based shooter, Helldivers 2, as well as the disappointing cancellation of The Last of Us Online. Hopefully, Fairgames will err on the side of the former.

I’d also posit that the PS5 exclusive’s monetization will also come under special scrutiny considering the anti-capitalist messaging in its trailer. As such, let’s hope whoever takes on the advertised role (nice spot, PushSquare) will offer Fairgames’ players a fair deal when it comes to cosmetics and other microtransactions. I can already envisage the memes if the only post-launch heist taking place here is one on your own bank account…
