Call of Duty Black Ops 6 rumored for May reveal ahead of Xbox event

The Call of Duty Black Ops 6 reveal could happen sooner than expected, with datamining efforts unearthing some rather tantalizing tidbits on PS5 and Xbox.

The 2024 Call of Duty game hype has been taken up a notch after recent reports seemingly confirmed that it will be the subject of Xbox’s mystery Direct on June 9. However, the new game, which is expected to mark a new entry in the Black Ops series, could be revealed in the coming weeks. That’s right, a May Black Ops 6 unveiling is possibly on the cards.

That’s according to Insider Gaming, which reports that “this month we’ll see the official logo and a short tease of the upcoming game,” ahead of the juicier deep-dive set to take place at the end of June’s Xbox Games Showcase. The iconic FPS game franchise’s latest installment – codenamed ‘Cerberus’ – is expected to bring a return to the Black Ops sub-series, and there’s plenty of recent evidence to support it.

Call of Duty Black Ops reveal May: a pistol with tally marks etched into it

Datamining efforts for the latest MW3 season, Season 3 Reloaded, have already yielded some pretty interesting results. The Cerberus logo we saw on the Xbox showcase announcement has been referenced throughout the game files – ‘s3_cerberus_reveal’ – while Charlie Intel posted up an image of the CoD 2024 reward blueprint (peep the six tally marks on it that signify it is the sixth entry in the Black Ops series).

As for when exactly we can expect this sneak peek to arrive, ‘skyla’ – the dataminer who originally posted the Cerberus logo back in January – says “the next Call of Duty game will be revealed near the end of Season 3 in an in-game event.” Considering the season is set to end on May 28 based on the current battle pass, this is in keeping with Insider Gaming’s original report.

While there are no extra details on how this event will materialize in the multiplayer game – we’re just looking at game files, after all – it sounds like the perfect way to begin the passing of the torch. What we do know from other data mines is that Frank Woods is set to return in MW3 and Warzone as a playable operator. Though he’s expected to serve as the pre-order bonus for Black Ops 6, there’s every chance he could somehow be involved in this crossover event.
