Modern Warfare 2 devs think Ghost deserves his own spinoff game

Infinity Ward developers have revealed that they really want to give Modern Warfare 2's Ghost his own spinoff game to delve into his origin story

MW2 Ghost spinoff game: Call of Duty character Ghost, wearing his trademark skull balaclava, bathed in red light

The campaign for Modern Warfare 2 has just dropped in early access, with fans of Task Force 141’s and the historic Modern Warfare series getting yet another new storyline involving Captain Price and friends. It turns out though that Infinity Ward really wants to give one of MW2’s iconic characters their own spinoff game to explore their somewhat mysterious backstory.

In an interview with IGN, Modern Warfare 2’s head writer Brian Bloom says that his dream is to make a spinoff that focuses on “Ghost’s origin story”. The balaclava-wearing 141 member, who stars more as a main character of Modern Warfare 2 and features on the box art, has his identity shrouded in secrecy.

While we do know some details about his backstory from the original Modern Warfare series, it’s not clear how much of this lore carries over to the version of Ghost we see in 2019’s Modern Warfare and the recently-released Modern Warfare 2. It appears there are plenty of people at Infinity Ward that are keen to set the record straight.

“There are others who would like to do that [a Ghost spinoff game] too,” Bloom tells IGN. “And we think that would be really interesting. And again, that’s kind of where this interview started, that there’s something about that character that’s iconic, but the mask and some of those more superficial elements, as we’ve attempted to build them out here in our current release, where did some of those things come from? And exploring that, and looking at that would be something I think the audience would love, and we would love to get into.”

While it sounds like this spinoff is not in development at this point, and it would be very out of character for an Activision project to be teased in this way before being officially announced, there is a small chance we could be seeing a double bluff here.

Leaks and reports from throughout 2022 have suggested that there will be a “premium” CoD game releasing next year, despite suggestions that the next main series game from Treyarch has been pushed to 2024, giving MW2 a two-year shelf life. With the Warzone 2 release date being confirmed for next month, and DMZ not releasing as a standalone game, could a Ghost spinoff be that mysterious premium content in 2023?

It’s unlikely, and as mentioned it would be strange for Infinity Ward to plant the seed for this in such a casual way, but not out of the realm of possibility.
