Respawn is bringing Mandalorian magic to new Star Wars game

Respawn Entertainment's new Mandalorian game is reportedly a first-person bounty-hunting bonanza that focuses on “mobility” and “style.”

Respawn Entertainment is developing a first-person Mandalorian game, according to a fresh report from Insider Gaming. The game, which is currently “a year or two away at the very least,” will use a linear level design with a focus on “mobility” and “style” as its guiding principles. It’s currently unclear if Pedro Pascal’s Mando will serve as the playable centerpiece.

According to the publication’s sources, the Mandalorian game will take place during the Galactic Era – sometime between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi in the films. As a beskar-donning bounty hunter, you’ll be tasked to “capture bounties dead or alive for cash rewards.” It might not be the ill-fated Star Wars 1313 – the best Star Wars game that never was – but we’re already sold.

Back in 2022, Jeff Grub reported for VentureBeat that Respawn was working on a new shooter with “triple-A” ambitions. Then-game lead Mohammad Alavi – best known for his work on some of the best FPS games and series like Apex Legends, Titanfall, and Call of Duty – left the studio at that time. But fortunately, this doesn’t seem to have hindered development.

This unnamed Mandalorian will, apparently, be able to utilize their jetpack for “horizontal dashing, vertical jumping, boost sliding (somewhat similar to sliding down hills in Apex Legends), and more.” If it’s anything like the parkour systems Respawn has used in Apex and Titanfall, then we’re in for an absolute treat in the movement department.

The “very fast-paced” game will also reward players for playing fast and loose. “For example, the player’s health will mainly regenerate based on successive kills,” the report stipulates. To achieve this, any good Mandalorian needs their trademark gadgets and gizmos. Sure, you can barrel through someone with your jetpack alone, but where’s the fun in that? (Okay, it does sound pretty fun…) Wrist rockets, grapple hooks, and “a visor for tagging enemies and bounties” will all be available should the leak materialize.

By the sounds of things, the Mandalorian will be a speedrunner’s dream. If Respawn managers deliver on the promising features in this report, then we could well have a contender for one of the best Xbox games and best PS5 games of this generation. It’s a bold claim, but the Star Wars Jedi games prove that Respawn can turn anything it touches into gold – especially when it comes to this legendary IP.
