You can play the best Ghostbusters game right now on PS Plus

If you're itching to put on a Proton Pack after Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, the best Ghostbusters game is on PS Plus right now for PS4 and PS5.

Some things in life are simple, and one thing is clear: bustin’ makes us feel good. Ghostbusters Frozen Empire is now on the big screen, but once you leave the theater, the fun doesn’t need to end there. All you need is a PS Plus subscription to suit up in Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered, which we reckon is the definitive ghoul trapping gaming adventure in the franchise on PS4 and PS5.

Before it got some remastered polish in 2019, the Terminal Reality-developed adventure first appeared on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Now, it’s easily one of the best PS5 games around on PS Plus, thanks to backwards compatibility with the PS4 remaster. You’ll need a PS Plus Premium tier membership to play it, as it is part of the Classics Catalog that Sony continues to update with new PS5 games and PS4 titles.

With all the original cast members returning for an adventure set after the first two movies, this is essentially the third movie that never saw the big screen. Stepping into the role of a new Ghostbusters recruit, everyone from Peter Venkman to Egon Spangler shows you the ropes along the way. Plenty of familiar faces, both heroic and villainous, show up too, but the game’s authentic depiction of the movie’s spirit is the real highlight. It isn’t exactly a horror game per se, but there are loads of frightful foes to round up.

Blending third-person shooter elements with the Ghostbusters’ tech, using the iconic Proton Pack to capture specters will bring a smile to the face of casual and hardcore Ghostbusters fans alike. Alongside getting to wield the P.K.E Meter and, yes, sliding down the Ghostbusters’ firehouse pole, we can’t help but giggle with joy every time we revisit the game.

Sadly, the remaster does omit the co-op game aspects of the original, as developer Mad Dog Games struggled to make the feature “cooperate” on current-gen consoles. Much of the game’s story is retrofitted from unused scripts for a third movie before the franchise evolved into the divisive 2016 reboot and 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Notably, elements from the unmade script of Ghostbusters: Hellbent shift the action of the game’s later stages into super creepy territory, as Ray Stantz and the gang fight in an eerie realm known as the Ghost World. We’d love to have Manhellton from the script depicted in the game, but we’re just happy to have this great addition to the franchise’s legacy.

There isn’t long left to play Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered, as it leaves PS Plus in April 2024. However, as the story is around 8 hours, you can easily fly through this.
