If you’re wanting to get around quicker in Minecraft, you might be wondering how to make a saddle. These can be used on tamed animals, allowing you to traverse the map with ease. However, figuring out how to make a saddle in Minecraft is a bit trickier than you might expect.

While it’s not impossible, you’ll have to do a little bit of work to get a saddle. But once you have one, it will save you a lot of time when you need to travel long distances.

Even though you can ride an animal once it’s tamed, you won’t be able to control its movements without a saddle. That’s why learning how to make a saddle in Minecraft is so important as it allows you to control where your mount goes. Without it, you’ll just be wandering around in circles. Fortunately for you, we’re going to explain how to get your hands on such a saddle, regardless of what edition of Minecraft you’re playing.

How to make a Minecraft saddle

If you’re looking to make your own Minecraft saddle, we’ve got some bad news for you: there is no way to craft the item from a Crafting Table. Instead, you have to find it in-game. Thankfully, there are a couple of different ways you can get a saddle, but it’ll differ depending on if you’re playing Survival or Creative mode, as well as if you’re playing Java or Bedrock.

But don’t worry, we are going to break down everything you need to know about where to find a saddle in Minecraft below.

Where to find a saddle in Survival Mode

If you’re playing in Survival mode, there are a handful of ways to find a saddle in Minecraft. However, the three main ways are trading with villagers, looting chests, and fishing.

If you’re familiar with the Minecraft villager jobs, then you should know that villagers have different professions and can trade different items with you. A Leatherworker knows how to make a saddle in Minecraft and is willing to trade with you.

However, there’s a catch. You’ll need to trade six Emeralds with a master-level Leatherworker to get a saddle. This means that you won’t be able to just find a random Leatherworker and trade with them instantly. You’ll have to trade with them until they’re up to Level three, which will take a handful of in-game days.

Once the villager is up to Level three though, they have up to a 50% chance of trading a saddle with you, depending on which version you’re playing.

The next best way to get a saddle in Minecraft is by looting chests. Specifically, in Java you’ll want to search chests in Nether Fortresses (35% chance), Dungeons (28% chance), and Desert Temples (23% chance). If you’re playing in Bedrock, you should search in the same locations too, but the percentages vary just a tad.

You can also find a saddle inside chests in Villages, Jungle Temples, and Strongholds, but the percentages are a lot lower. However, if you happen to come across these locations, you might as well check them out, because you might get lucky.

The last best way to get a saddle in Minecraft isn’t really that great, but it’s worth mentioning. It is possible to find a saddle while fishing, but you have less than a 1% chance. However, if you’re feeling lucky, or just want some time on the water, grab your rod, and cast a line.

Where to find a saddle in Creative Mode

Unlike Survival mode, you can sort of make a saddle in Minecraft’s Creative mode. Though, like every item in Creative, it’s less about crafting it and more about pulling it out of your inventory.

Here’s how to get a saddle in Creative mode for Java, Bedrock, and Pocket Edition:

  • Java: Open the Creative Inventory and go to the Transportation tab
  • Bedrock: Open the Equipment menu
  • Pocket Edition: Open the Equipment menu and go to the Tools tab

Like most things, it’s not very hard to get a Saddle in Creative mode.

What is a saddle used for in Minecraft?

In Minecraft, a saddle is used for transportation. Placing a saddle on a horse, donkey, pig, or mule will allow you to have control while you ride them.

While you can ride a tamed horse without a saddle, you won’t be able to control it without one. As you can imagine, it’ll be a bit hard to get from point A to point B with an uncontrollable mount. So, if you want to use an animal to get across the map, it’s best to have a Saddle.

It’s also worth noting that you can equip a tamed horse, donkey, or mule with a Saddle by placing it in their inventory. You can unequip it by removing it from their inventory. However, if you place a Saddle on a pig, you won’t be able to unequip it unless you kill it. Poor little piggy.

Now that you know that you can’t learn how to make a saddle in Minecraft, you should be able to find one with a little bit of effort. While it’s not the most useful item in the game, it can certainly be beneficial when used the right way and help you get back to your house – you know, the one you build using our Minecraft house ideas guide.
