The latest Helldivers 2 trailer has dropped, revealing a lot about The Galactic War as well as how you and your pals will be able to aid the war effort on PS5. Of course, you won’t just be left floating through space, and it turns out each Helldiver gets their own Super Destroyer once they’ve been awoken from cryosleep. As per a not-so-cryptic Reddit response from game director Johan Pilestedt, it also looks like we’ll get to label our beloved hunk of spacefaring metal.
As highlighted by ‘TheRevanent’ over on Reddit, at the 1:05 mark in the “A United Stand” trailer we can see “SES Representative of Individual Merit” proudly emblazoned on the side of a Destroyer. “Man, I hope we can name our ships,” the Redditor expresses. To this, Pilestedt simply responds with a winky face. Forget about Helldiver 2’s chaotic co-op gameplay and zany humor, if ship names are on the cards then it’s already one of the best PS5 games of 2024 in this writer’s book.
We’re unsurprised that ship names are high up on some players’ wishlists. Humanity loves naming shit – we’ve been doing it for thousands of years, and by now we’re actually quite good at it. So when it comes to Helldivers 2, a game that’s already oozing plenty of personality in its promotional content, it makes perfect sense that the noble metallic steed of humankind’s finest would also get the same treatment.
As noted in the trailer, there’ll be plenty to do on your ship, too. As the central nucleus of your Helldivers 2 journey, the galactic map can be accessed from here. This gives you a full overview of the current war fronts you can dive into, as well as your available orders.
Progress towards winning the war can be made by undertaking Major Orders – high-level community goals that you contribute towards – and Personal Orders, which will see you take on specific enemies in specific ways for rewards. There are also Operations that consist of sets of missions – the higher the difficulty, the more missions per Operation.
In return for your in-game labors you’ll not only be able to earn materials to upgrade your ship, but you’ll also be able to unlock new weapons, armor, and other elements of your loadout. Dive in. Kill stuff. Get paid. Sounds perfect. Just make sure you’re putting the ‘co-op’ in what could be one of the year’s best co-op games, or face certain defeat when Helldivers 2 arrives on February 8.
