Following a bug-riddled launch, PS5 exclusive Helldivers 2 has finally found its footing on planet GaaS – so much so that Arrowhead CEO and game director Johan Pilestedt says that the studio is looking to enlist new recruits.
“With the success of Helldivers 2, we are going to start looking for more amazing developers that can help us accelerate and beef up our content plans,” Pilestedt tweets. “Jobs will be going up soon, but if you are a senior dev there’s always the ‘open application’.”
According to Arrowhead’s website, the studio currently has ~120 people working for it. The Stockholm-based developer already has a few job listings up, including ads for engineers and programmers, but Helldivers 2’s remarkable performance has clearly required a rapid response to one of 2024’s best PS5 games.
On February 11 Pilestadt tweeted that “around a million” units of Helldivers 2 have been sold so far, and that Arrowhead is “blowing through the estimates.” It’s not only performing on PS5, either. As spotted by ‘Benji-Sales’ on Twitter, Helldivers 2 is the first PlayStation first-party title to pass 200,000 concurrent players on Steam – no wonder Pilestedt is looking to scale up. Its overwhelming popularity has been a bit of a double-edged sword, though, as the price of success has been felt server-side.
Despite increasing server capacity as well as the rate at which players were being let in, Helldivers 2 is still struggling to keep up with demand. A new patch has dropped that aims to bolster general stability, while “resolving connectivity and disconnect issues,” so there’s a hope that Arrowhead will be able to whip things into shape quickly.
Of all the problems to have, suffering from success is undoubtedly the best – especially in the Games as a Service sector – but it’s clear that Arrowhead is doing its best to elevate its capabilities across the board. As one of the most exciting PS5 exclusives to hit Sony’s console, there’s hope that Helldivers 2 will survive its incredibly competitive environment.
