FIFA 23 update nerfs overpowered through ball mechanic

FIFA 23 players, you're in luck - EA has nerfed the over-powered lobbed driven through ball pass mechanic in a recent update ahead of the 2022 World Cup final

We know there should be some sort of unspoken agreement between FIFA 23 players when it comes to broken mechanics and meta tactics, but sweaty goals keep going in and if there’s a way to guarantee a corner kick results in a goal, you know we’re going to make the most of it. However, if you’re someone who has suffered at the hands of FIFA 23’s latest broken mechanic – the beyond broken lobbed driven through ball pass – you’ll be pleased to know that EA has taken action and actually nerfed this mechanic specifically in a recent FIFA 23 title update.

In this football game’s Live Tuning Update #4, EA has confirmed that it has implemented the following change via the FIFA 23 Trello board: “Reduced the accuracy of Lobbed Driven Through Passes, including when first timed, [and] when the requested aim direction is significantly different than the direction that the ball carrier is facing”.

Now, we don’t think we have read anything more beautiful than that from EA in a long time – but, what does this actually mean? Well, if you’re planning on picking up FIFA 23 for cheap with Xbox Game Pass, you’re going to want to keep reading.

You have to consider what you need to do to actually pull off a Lobbed Driven Through Pass in-game and what this should and has resulted in.

In order to pull off  a Lobbed Driven Through Pass, you need to press L1/LB, R1/RB, and Triangle/Y simultaneously to combine the benefits of a through ball and a driven pass. Prior to the update, this mechanic had quickly become infamous for effectively locking on to the attacking player making the run with a ball that is fast and elevated enough to carry it beyond the reach of defensive players.

If you want to see this in action for yourself, this video from FIFA 23 content creator Dylan Banks should tell you everything you need to know:

But, you’ll be pleased to know that these overpowered passes should be less of an issue going forwards. Now, at the very least, you’ll have to be facing and travelling in the same direction as the proposed lobbed through ball to make the most of this tactic.

Whether you’re using the best FIFA 23 midfielders and the best FIFA 23 strikers or not, it’s always worth keeping an eye out for these over-powered tactics in-game. They’re not always as easy to work out, but when you can master one (while it’s available in-game), it’s worth using – everyone else will.
