In November last year, Demon Turf was released digitally on all platforms. Created by indie developers, Fabraz, this 3D platforming game has built up quite a dedicated following in the months since it first became available. Those who have fallen in love with the game, but wish that it could sit upon the shelf alongside their other favourites will be happy to hear that you can now buy a physical copy for Xbox Series X.
The game uses 2D character models in a 3D world, with very vibrant and colourful designs – including the protagonist, Beebz, a demon who one day decides that she wants to overthrow the Demon King and rule the underworld. Beebz’s journey takes her through a variety of different levels, each of which will put your platforming skills to the test.
As Beebz makes her way through the game, she unlocks new abilities that she’ll need to get through later levels, for example unlocking a hookshot, or the ability to transform into a wheel and move really fast (at the expense of having less control).
It’s a game that’s garnered interest from the speedrunning community, because each level has been specially designed so that if you have the skill and the know-how, you can finish them in just a minute or two. Most people will take a good 10 – 20 minutes for each level, but if you really hone your skills with the game and look out for shortcuts and exploits, the game will reward you, earning you a place on the coveted leaderboards.
If you enjoyed Psychonauts 2, Ori and the Blind Forest, or the platformers of the GameCube and PlayStation 2 eras, this is something that’s going to be a great little nostalgia trip for you. Indeed, fans of indie platforming games in general will be pleased to know that Yooka and Laylee (from, well, Yooka-Laylee) have a neat little cameo hidden in the game, as do a number of other iconic indie gaming characters.
