Warzone 2 DMZ weapon unlocks could be tied to boss fights

Call of Duty Warzone 2 DMZ will let you unlock new seasonal weapons by defeating a "redacted" enemy force, which could be Escape From Tarkov-style AI bosses

Warzone 2 DMZ weapon unlocks: Two operators run with weapons in hand

November 14, 2022 The M13B has appeared in Modern Warfare 2, and its unlock description all but confirms that there will be Warzone 2 DMZ bosses.

It’s been revealed that at least one of the new seasonal weapons added to Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 will only be unlockable during the season by playing DMZ, the extraction mode within Warzone 2. It also appears that getting this new weapon won’t be a stroll in the park, as you may have to take down a tough AI boss to earn them as a reward.

Ahead of the Warzone 2 release time, a new blog post reveals plenty more DMZ details after the mode’s slightly confusing debut at a livestreamed event last week. The blog not only confirms that Season 1’s M13B will be unlockable by playing DMZ, but it also says that the “new free functional weapon is earned by defeating [[REDACTED]]” – a term many CoD blog readers will know points towards a big old secret.

The wording of that sentence seems to suggest that we’ll be taking on someone, rather than something. It might be that the M13B is just locked behind a special DMZ contract or super-strength Stronghold, but this could also suggest that we’ll have to take on some kind of tough boss to get our hands on the new weapon.

This theory has now been all but confirmed with the addition of the M13B into the Gunsmith menus. Hovering over it will show you how to unlock it, and it now puts a name to ‘REDACTED’.

“Unlock by defeating The Chemist in the Radiation Zone of DMZ and extracting with his dropped weapon,” the description reads.

While DMZ devs are truly sick of the comparisons at this point, this is something that is used to great effect in hardcore extraction shooter Escape From Tarkov. AI-controlled bosses that are super tough to take down and protected by guards can be tracked down, and eliminating them and looting their bodies will give you the most desirable loot. While it’s clear by now that DMZ is not on that same hardcore level, capitalising on one of the main talking points of Tarkov (its bosses) would be a smart move.

Infinity Ward has also made it very clear that there is an overarching narrative that will develop over time in DMZ, and alongside the factions it announced in the blog post, seasonal bosses would be another way to progress the story along.

DMZ launches alongside the Warzone 2 Season 1 release date later this week.
