We almost got zombies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Concept art shows what the undead would have looked like in the FPS

Ghost Call of Duty Modern Warfare

Call of Duty and zombies go hand in (severed) hand these days. When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare made it into our hands, however, there was no zombie mode and instead, we got other cool content like Call of Duty: Warzone. It has been revealed though, that Modern Warfare was this close to getting a zombie mode, and we know what it might have looked like [Dexerto, via PCGN].

The principal artist Aaron Beck from Infinity Ward, has shared a chilling image of zombie concept art for Modern Warfare. In this image, the zombie is not just a random unfortunate civilian but undead soldiers being walked on leashes by robots. As it’s only a concept we have no idea how this would have interacted with the Modern Warfare story or what the mode would have been like but it’s a stunning and creepy image to look at.

Aaron Beck posted the picture with a little bit of insight into what the image meant. “Zombie Walker. Finally got clearance to share more art from Modern Warfare! So to begin here’s an unused concept from early in production.

“I was thinking it would be fun to play with the classic Call of Duty zombie gameplay, hinting here at some sort of Russian special forces soldier and his duo of quadruped robots, holding captive zombified soldiers by leashes around their necks.”

Sadly we didn’t get to see this concept in Modern Warfare, but we know that the next CoD is in production from pros talking to Treyach about it, so maybe we’ll be seeing more zombie action in the near future.
