MW2 should embrace its roots with classic guns in Season 4 Reloaded

Modern Warfare 2 Season 4 isn't far away for PS5 and Xbox players, and COD fans are eager for the franchise to respect its roots in the next MW2 update.

MW2 Season 4 Reloaded guns

The next Modern Warfare 2 update is almost here, as the Modern Warfare 2 Season 4 Reloaded release date sits on the horizon. As expected with every midseason update for a Call of Duty game, tweaks to multiplayer playlists will likely be implemented, but it’s the potential for additions to the best Modern Warfare 2 guns that have us excited – and fans are eager for the franchise to pay respect to its roots.

“Would you appreciate or not appreciate MWII adding older and classic guns? Like what MW did with the Kar98?,” asks MW2 Redditor ‘ToastedSocks77’. An age-old debate for the COD community has always revolved around the franchise’s realism. However, tapping into the entries based on World War 2 with some “classic guns” revamped inside of MW2’s engine could prove to be fun.

Redditor ‘StillGalaxy99’ believes it could work, dependent on the context of the update: “As long as it makes sense to include. There are numerous WW2 weapons that still find some use in modern combat.”

Though the Modern Warfare 2 Season 4 guns list will likely focus on current-day weaponry, we have seen the franchise crossover arsenals from multiple eras before.

Black Ops Cold War introduced a variety of new guns for usage in the battle royale spin-off Warzone, blending Modern Warfare (2019) and BOCW together in a unique way. This did, however, lead to some balancing issues as each game was developed in separate versions of the IW engine.

Chrisboy265‘ is also in the opinion that context is vital for adding aged weaponry into the mix: “Only if they can fit the context of the game, like how in Modern Warfare (2019) they put the Kar98 and the MG34 in the game because they’re still seen occasionally as military surplus in the Middle East.”

There are some caveats to this idea, and Call of Duty Vanguard comes to mind specifically. Sledgehammer Games revisits World War 2 in its third COD effort, following Advanced Warfare and COD WW2. You may remember that Vanguard’s weapons were particularly overpowered when they arrived in Warzone, making battles in Caldera tougher than ever.

Modern Warfare 2 may face those pratfalls should weapons similar eras return, and with a mixed reception to previous updates within the game’s community. Nevertheless, many fans still hold up MW2 to be one of the best FPS games around, and if the latest update brings the goods, it could be a great time ahead before the Call of Duty 2023 release date.
