Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is shaping up to be one of the best entries into the popular FPS series yet and Infinity Ward is spilling the proverbial beans on what players can expect when they jump into this shooter later in the year. One thing that’s worth talking about is the advanced AI system coming to Modern Warfare 2. Discussing this new system on the Call of Duty Blog, Infinity Ward has shared the following statement:
“ [Modern Warfare 2] features a new advanced AI system. Enemies and friendlies alike across Campaign and Special Ops act tactically using combat and cover manoeuvring techniques that would be second nature to a Tier 1 Operator.”
Interestingly, Charlie Intel builds on this short official statement with reports that airsoft players acted as the initial inspiration for this updated system. We know this isn’t the most unlikely source, but it’s an interesting insight into how the development of these features work.
In the article in question, Charlie Intel explains that Modern Warfare 2 developers “observed how an airsoft player tried to avoid getting hit, checked their corners, and preserved their life”. This inspired the developers to capture the natural movements of military professionals in combat situations to create a new system where the AI are fully aware of their surroundings and the threat they’re under – AI that actually care about their lives, basically.

In the past, Call of Duty’s AI have been known to be a little predictable and reckless, acting more as a shooting gallery for players as opposed to a real challenge. However, it looks like that’s set to change with Modern Warfare 2 and we can’t wait to find out more about how Modern Warfare 2’s campaign and Spec Ops mode will play.
