Lucian is the most banned League of Legends champion at Worlds 2020 so far

Ah, Worlds. The melting pot of metas and playstyles from across the globe. It really is a sight to behold.

One thing that affects all teams from all nations, however, is the knee-buckling fear that you’ll be facing an overpowered champion. At last year’s Worlds, Pantheon smashed all kinds of records after being banned in almost every match at the tournament from the play-ins through to the final. While we will (hopefully) never see such scenes again, which champions have been terrifying pro players in the draft throughout the early stages of LoL Worlds 2020?

Well, at the time of writing halfway through the group stage, Lucian is so far the most banned champion at Worlds 2020 with 18 bans, according to GoL. If we take the play-ins into account, Lucian is tied with Ornn for bans, with both champions having 36 a piece. While Ornn’s ban rate has fallen throughout the group stage and has been more regularly played by the likes of Fnatic’s Gabriel ‘Bwipo’ Rau, Lucian continues to be a scary prospect in the mid lane – and for good reason.

In the four group stage games Lucian has slipped the net and not been banned, he has achieved an average KDA ratio of 6.0 and has a 100% win rate. In two of those games Lucian tore up the Rift in a single life, racking up kills, and has generally been a nuisance against common mid lane picks Orianna and Syndra.

However, for overall pick/ban presence in the draft, Lucian’s 91.7% presence rate is toppled by just one other champion: Nidalee.

Heavily banned during the play-ins, the stronger teams in the group stage have been slightly more forgiving in letting Nidalee survive the draft. With a 96% presence rate, there has only been one game in the group stage so far in which the Bestial Huntress has not been picked or banned, showing just how crucial she currently is in the Worlds meta.

She has been favoured by some of Worlds’ top junglers, such as Suning’s Le ‘SofM’ Quang Duy, G2’s Marcin ‘Jankos’ Jankowski, and DRX’s Hong ‘Pyosik’ Chang-hyeong. The latter used Nidalee to rip apart Unicorns of Love with a huge 13/1/6 game in Group D.

While Lucian and Nidalee currently lead the way as two of Worlds’ scariest champions, there’s still plenty of time for other potential threats to emerge.

Seeing as the pros are so terrified, maybe you should try your hand at Lucian or Nidalee when you’re playing some ranked League of Legends? Or just remember to hit them with the ban hammer…
