T1’s Gumayusi secures the first pentakill of the 2021 LoL competitive season

DWG KIA was today victorious in the first match of its 2021 LCK campaign. However, the first game in its series against T1 did not go exactly to plan, with the three-time world champion closing out the game convincingly. During the game, DWG also conceded the first pentakill of the 2021 LoL esports season to botlaner Lee ‘Gumayusi’ Min-hyeong.

From the clip the official LCK account uploaded to Twitter, we can see that the teamfight leading to Gumayusi’s penta begins at the dragon pit. After Choi ‘Ellim’ El-lim secures the mountain dragon for T1, Cho ‘BeryL’ Geon-hee engages with a headbutt-pulverise combo. Before Kim ‘Khan’ Dong-ha can follow up, Ryu ‘Keria’ Min-seok lands a clean hook, dragging the Volibear into the rest of the team where Gumayusi’s Aphelios can easily finish the kill.

While the rest of DWG pulls back, Heo ‘Showmaker’ Su re-engages and hits a four-player Yone ult. Unfortunately for him, Keria is quick to Exhaust the midlaner, leaving him weakened and separated from the rest of the team. That is until Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok Shurima shuffles, flashes, and ults the DWG back line, launching Kim ‘Canyon’ Geon-bu into the mass of T1 players. With Aphelios sporting his Severum and Crescendum weapons, Gumayusi is poised to make quick work of his next offerings.

With the fight clearly doomed for DWG, the bot lane duo of Jang ‘Ghost’ Yong-jun and BeryL make a last-ditch effort to get something out of it before their screens turn grey. Flying into T1’s back line, the pair manage to finish off Ellim before they too fall prey to Gumayusi, completing the botlaner’s penta.

DWG was the final team to secure a competitive pentakill in 2020, with Canyon’s sweep on Graves against DRX in the KeSPA cup. In this instance, the tables have indeed been turned on the world champion.
