Best PS5 horror games: Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village

What are the best PS5 horror games? For those with a love for all things scary, there’s an active desire to seek out the things that go bump in the night. With our best PS5 horror games list in hand, you’ll be able to spend your time hunting for ghosts, rather than games to play.

But with so much horror out there, what’s the best use of your time and some of the best horror games out there? If the idea of a chilling late-night phone call asking you ‘What’s your favorite scary game?’ fills you with fear, don’t sweat it – we’ve all been there. We have the best games and the best PS5 games to give you some horror-related trauma to work out which ones chill the blood, and which ones should just, you know, chill out for a second.

The best PS5 horror games are:

Best PS5 horror games: Alan Wake 2

1. Alan Wake 2

We’re back in Bright Falls again, baby, and this time it’s not just Alan who you’ll be playing as. In Alan Wake 2, you’ll also find yourself embodying Saga Anderson, an FBI agent who is investigating a deadly mystery in the area that just so happens to be connected to the titular character.

In our Alan Wake 2 review Sam calls it “Remedy Entertainment’s most ambitious game so far”, citing it as “visually astounding, thematically potent, and an absolute must for newcomers and fans alike.” Needless to say, you better get on it.

You can buy Alan Wake 2 on the PlayStation US store here, and the PlayStation UK store here.

PS5 horror games: Dani points a shotgun at Jacob in The Callisto Protocol

2. The Callisto Protocol

When Jacob Lee crashes on Callisto, the dark moon of Jupiter, he doesn’t expect to be arrested and interred in Black Iron Prison – except he is. And while he’s there, things start to go wrong and he has to stage a break out to discover why.

This claustrophobic horror game will have you crawling through vents –  even if you don’t want to – and shooting tentacles off enemies. It’s full of jump scares and it looks beautiful too – check out our full thoughts in our The Callisto Protocol review.

Best PS5 horror games: Dead Space Remake

3. Dead Space Remake

If you want to be whisked away to an abandoned space-freighter, come face-to-face with some truly gruesome creatures, and experience some of the most satisfying combat on offer, Dead Space really is the perfect game for you. This genre-defining title is without a doubt one of the best horror games available right now.

They say that no one can hear you scream in space, but that isn’t true for Dead Space. Dismemberment is key if you want to survive, but you’ll need to work hard to keep your head when you come face-to-face with the mind-bending conspiracy at play here. Nowhere is safe, but that’s what makes Dead Space truly remarkable.

Best PS5 horror games: a woman in a red jacket holding a gun

4. Resident Evil 2 Remake

You’re probably wondering ‘The Loadout, why are there so many Resident Evil games here?’ Well, you see, Capcom has a knack for putting out absolute bangers, and its recent remake series is the studio at its horrific best.

2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake kicked off the trio, notching up a magnificent 91 Metacritic score. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s bizarre adventure through Raccoon City provides you with about a dozen hours of intense, zombie-filled gameplay. Oh, and there’s a very special surprise in store for you. Did we say ‘special’? We meant ‘deadly.’

Best PS5 horror games: a woman and a man with a backpack tend to an old soldier on a train

5. Resident Evil 3 Remake

If you haven’t come face-to-face with the terrifying Nemesis yet then you should count your lucky S.T.A.R.S. Despite only managing to notch up a Metacritic score of 79, we think the Resi 3 Remake deserves to be put on a similar pedestal as its classmates.

While you’re back in Raccoon City yet again, you’ll this time take control of former S.T.A.R.S. agent Jill Valentine alongside mercenary Carlos Oliveira. After everyone in the city turns into zombies, it’s down to the duo to find the cure and get out of dodge. If that sounded like an already unenvious task, Jill also has to watch her back as superweapon Nemesis is constantly on the hunt.

Best PS5 horror games: a man enshrouded in flames holding a gun

6. Resident Evil 4 Remake

Certified dreamboat Leon Kennedy returns in Resident Evil 4, and this time he’s got to save the president’s daughter. Resi 4 is regarded by many as the best in the series, and 2023’s remake did its source material proud. With a whopping 93 Metacritic score, the Resi 4 remake is a certified must-play.

In our 9/10 Resident Evil 4 Remake review we dub it “a masterfully crafted action game that is a perfect coalescence of everything great about the series.” Matching the best of the series’ combat with “well-thought-out puzzles and satisfying exploration,” this is the Resi game, if any, to play on current-gen hardware.

Best PS5 horror games: Lady D smiles in Resident Evil Village

7. Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village doesn’t have the same scare factor as its predecessor Resident Evil 7, but with its classic structure that pits you against four different bad guys, and then throws you into one set piece after another, it certainly gets your heart racing.

Village cranks the action all the way up, turning protagonist Ethan Winters from the victim he was in Resi 7 to an all-action survivor here in Village, but the threats are more substantial, with you coming toe to toe with a castle full of vampires, some fish people, and hordes of werewolves. This horror classic even takes all your weapons away from you in one memorable scene, leaving you to skulk around a dingy house while something is on the loose.

Village is a great pick because it’s a love letter to the series that came before it, and also the canon of schlocky B-movie horrors. Village might start to drag in its last couple of hours, but it’s absolutely worth your time – especially considering its solid DLC and VR offerings for those of you with one eye on our best PSVR2 games list.

Best PS5 horror games: An Alien roars in Alien Isolation

8. Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation came out all the way back in 2014, but there isn’t another PS4 game out there that has captured the sheer horror of an intelligent creature stalking you through an enclosed space.

Here, the terror is a xenomorph, a perfect organism as long as all you want your organism to do is murder people. The enclosed space is a space station, the Sevastopol space station to be exact. During your playthrough, you’ll be expected to escape the station all while ducking from the unstoppable xenomorph and murderous androids.

Oh yeah, and the alien is smarter than you – it learns as you play. So if you think hiding in a locker or under a desk is going to save you, think again.

best ps5 horror games: Freddie Kreuger carries a survivor off into the fog in Dead By Daylight

9. Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is a horror phenomenon. If you’re a Twitch fan, you’ve probably already heard of it: four survivors wake up in an otherworldly environment and they have to power up generators to power up the big gates that promise salvation.

The spanner in the works is the killer, controlled by a fifth player. The Dead by Daylight killer’s goal is to wipe out the players, either by hanging them on hooks or by killing them with a flashy ‘Mori’, which kills them brutally.

Dead by Daylight often more closely resembles a cooperative stealth game than a horror, but when you factor in that through shrewd licensing deals Dead by Daylight could have you playing as Ghostface from Scream, Michael Myers from Halloween, or even the Nemesis from Resident Evil, there are plenty of opportunities for jump scares.

Best PS5 horror games: House of Ashes survivor with blood dripping down their face

10. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

You can play just about any game in the Dark Pictures Anthology and have a fun time – the whole series excels at dropping you in a playable horror movie and challenging you to try and make the best of it.

However, House of Ashes is the best so far – it’s more Aliens than Alien, with gun-toting marines running afoul of a cursed Akkadian temple and struggling to deal with the monsters – and each other.

This is also one of the best PS5 co-op games, so buddy up and experience this differently. Just don’t expect them to rescue you if something goes bump in the night.

Best PS5 horror games: Alan Wake shines a torch in the mist

11. Alan Wake Remastered

Alan Wake Remastered is a must-play for fans of schlocky nonsense. You play as the titular author, who takes more than a little inspiration from Steven King, exploring the new town he lives in.

However, there’s something very big and very dangerous out there bumping away in the night, so in true horror fashion, you go out there armed with guns and a flashlight. While your enemies can be killed, darkness protects them and the only protection is light, so you’ll need to burn away your enemies’ shields with your torch.

The game might be showing its age, but it’s great fun and the remaster makes it a modern classic for those looking to get their kicks from the best PS5 horror games. It’s not essential to play it before Alan Wake 2, but it’s definitely recommended.

best PS5 horror games: A player kicks a mercenary in Dying Light 2

12. Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is the sequel to the smash hit of the same name Dying Light. If you love the idea of parkouring across cityscapes, smashing zombies up, and having to run for your life atop the many rooftops, Dying Light 2 is the game for you.

Dying Light 2 thrusts players into a savaged world, overrun with all sorts of monstrosities. Thankfully the city of Villedor stands tall amongst all the other ruined cities – something you can read more about in our Dying Light 2 review. Players will have the opportunity to explore to their heart’s content, rescue survivors, scavenge for supplies, and fend off a wide variety of zombies in the most gruesome of ways.

So what are you waiting for? Buddy up or go it alone and see how long you can survive the nightmares that lurk in the darkness.

best ps5 horror games: an old lady raises her hand in The quarry

13. The Quarry

The Quarry is beyond a doubt one of the best horror games on the PS5. It’s from Supermassive Games and draws a lot from what the studio’s learned from its lauded work Until Dawn.

Unlike that game, however, The Quarry focuses on a killer in summer camp in true retro spooks style. It’s an interactive game where you have to make choices much like Until Dawn. And much like its predecessor, The Quarry places acting at the forefront of the experience.

Our The Quarry review called it wonderfully atmospheric, so it’s well worth checking out for PS5 owners.

Best PS5 horror games: Texas Chain Saw Massacre

14. Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Dead by Daylight fans with a love for old Leatherface will be elated to know there’s another hide-and-seek-style horror experience out there that revolves around the notorious Slaughter family as they appeared in the classic 1974 flick.

In this 3v4 team-based multiplayer experience, victims must band together to navigate their way out of the Slaughter family’s clutches. There’s tons of fun to be had here.

Best PS5 horror games: Amnesia the Bunker

15. Amnesia: The Bunker

The iconic Amnesia series is a must-play for any horror fan, and The Bunker is no exception. As the title implies, you find yourself trapped in a bunker during World War 1, with naught but a revolver and a single bullet.

Throughout The Bunker, you’ll have to carefully ration out the resources available to you to keep the lights on, and the horrifying stalker that hides within its walls at bay. The Halloween 2023 update added bonus modifiers, making it far more replayable thanks to the extra handicaps you can give yourself… if you dare.

You can buy Amnesia: The Bunker on the PlayStation US store here, and the PlayStation UK store here. While the game is technically only on PS4, it will still work on current-gen hardware.

Best PS5 horror games: Apuslov End of Gods

16. Apsulov: End of Gods

There’s horror, and then there’s futuristic Viking horror. That’s right, Apsulov: End of Gods is an atmospheric horror experience that is drenched in Norse mythos, and it all kicks off as you awaken in a Swedish research facility that’s been investigating the world tree, Ygdrassil, as well as the nine realms tied to it.

However, as humanity was able to enter and learn from the realms, it brought back with it more than it bargained for… As Alice, an amnesiac girl who comes into possession of an ancient artifact, you’ll work to uncover the truth behind your past while seeking to stop the world from falling into chaos.

Apsulov is certainly one of the most stylish horrors on this list, blending archaic and futuristic elements to create striking visuals that you won’t forget in a hurry. It’s not the most challenging game, but it will certainly frighten you here and there.

Best PS5 horror games: Rami Malek wearing a checkered shirt in Until Dawn

17. Until Dawn

Considered by many as Supermassive Games’ magnum opus, Until Dawn put the UK-based developer on the map in a big way back in 2015 when it arrived exclusively on PS4 – don’t worry, it’s also one of the best PS5 exclusives thanks to backwards compatibility.

As with The Quarry, Until Dawn is a choice-based cinematic experience, though here you’re following a group of friends in a relaxing mountain retreat-turned-nightmare scenario. When it was originally released Until Dawn stood out from its contemporaries due to this unique style that was perhaps inspired by Quantic Dream’s own cinematic experience.

What truly makes Until Dawn one of the best PS5 horror games to us is its memorable cast of characters. Love them or hate them, each one is wonderfully written, and are backed by fantastic VO performances from the likes of Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Jordan Fisher – the actors also offer up their likeness, so keep an eye out for those uncanny resemblances.

Best PS5 games: a giant tower juts up in the distance in Scorn

18. Scorn

Scorn is sick – both in the gruesome sense and the ‘this is good you should play it’ sense. Echo says it best in our Scorn review: “I don’t think I can say I have played a game where every single part of the environment, world-building, and visuals left me both awestruck, disgusted, and confused in equal measures.”

Scorn is very similar to Elden Ring in the sense that it relies pretty much entirely on environmental storytelling to reveal its narrative, which makes solving its tantalizingly tricky puzzles even more rewarding. Inspired by the works of H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, Scorn is a visual marvel, blending flesh and machine in the most grotesque way imaginable.

Before jumping in, be sure to check out the Scorn length to see how long you can expect to spend with it, and when you do jump in make sure you’ve got our Scorn walkthrough handy in case you do get stuck.
