Ryan ‘Reav3’ Mireles, the lead producer on the League of legends champions team, has a preview of the year ahead for the development of new and existing champions.
As well as showing off the newest champion Sett and giving an update on the team’s rework of Fiddlesticks, Reav3 revealed that owners of the other champion currently receiving a VGU, Volibear, will get a free skin once his rework is complete. This is due to many Volibear fans feeling disappointed with the direction they were taking the champion in and wanted the team to draw more on some of the recent, darker, lore that Volibear has been featured in.
“We saw that some players were disappointed that we didn’t take Volibear in a more ‘Eldritch Horror’ direction, like he has been portrayed as in some of our recent lore,” Reav3 explains. He goes on to say that many members of the team liked the concept, but felt it “didn’t stay true enough to live Volibear.”
“Here’s what we’re gonna do,” he continues. “We’re gonna take the demonic concept of Volibear across the finish line and make a kind of Eldritch Horror-themed skin.” This skin will then be given to all players who either own Volibear or purchase him during his launch patch in order to appease those fans who wanted a darker tone to the demi-god’s design.
The plan is to continue on Volibear’s current rework path, which sees the team “beefing him up a bit and making him look even more savage,” but still ending up with a recognisable Volibear, and release this darker “demonic” skin alongside it.
While this is an interesting idea that satisfies the different needs of Volibear fans, Reav3 stresses that this will be a one off and not become the norm for reworked champions.
The video above also outlines some of the progress made on Fiddlesticks’ VGU and drops some hints about which angle the team are going down to introduce new champions into League of Legends.
