Hogwarts Legacy spell categories

The Hogwarts Legacy spells are split into different categories each with its own benefits and uses:

  • Essential Spells, such as Revelio, are activated using the left d-pad on a controller and are learned through the story. These are required to progress through the game and complete puzzles.
  • Damage Spells, such as Confringo, are combat-oriented spells made for dealing damage and defeating enemies.
  • Force Spells, such as Accio, look to move objects and enemies around to deal damage.
  • Control Spells, such as Arresto Momentum, are designed for crowd control, immobilising or interrupting opponents.

These advanced Hogwarts Legacy spells have cooldowns, some of which are longer than others. Between casting these spells, players will also have access to a basic attack which, while simple, can be used to string combos together and maintain damage since it doesn’t have a cooldown.

Additionally, each spell type is colour-coded to match opponents’ shields:

  • Control Spells have a yellow icon and are used to break yellow shields.
  • Force Spells have a purple icon and are used to break purple shields.
  • Damage Spells have a red icon and are used to break red shields.

How to use Hogwarts Legacy spells

Furthermore, as you progress through the game you will gain access to additional spell diamonds. Overall, you can have four different spell diamonds that can be swapped between during combat for a total of 16 spells equipped at any given time.

Hogwarts Legacy has drawn considerable criticism during its development, largely due to the fact that the creator of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, has made a number of transphobic remarks on social media in recent years.

While Avalanche has confirmed that J.K. Rowling is not “directly involved” in the development of Hogwarts Legacy, it is working with “her team” and Portkey Games, a Warner Bros. label dedicated to launching new experiences inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original stories. It is currently unclear whether she will earn any royalties from the game’s sale, but it is likely given it is based on her original body of work.
