The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine is one of the greatest RPG expansions of all time. For years, it was even considered the GOAT – at least, by the critics. However, its crown has now been usurped by Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree on PS5 and Xbox, and The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red only has glowing things to say about its dethroning.
Having scored a mighty 92/100 on Metacritic when it was released back in 2016, The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine has been at the peak of the RPG game DLC food chain for the best part of a decade. However, the just-launched Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree has breezed past it, notching up a remarkable 95. Despite being removed from the top spot, CDPR has nothing but love for FromSoftware.
“For the last 8 years, The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine had the honor of being the best-reviewed expansion for a role-playing game – but Elden Ring gets to wear that crown now,” CDPR tweets. “Congratulations to the entire team at FromSoftware on their stellar work!” Real recognizes real.
Alongside the kind message, CDPR offered up a collage of screenshots taken by its team members as they prepared for Shadow of the Erdtree to drop. While many have already bested Mohg – one of the pre-requisite Elden Ring bosses you need to defeat before you can enter the Land of Shadow – several eager devs have been playing catchup.
Considering how well-received the Elden Ring DLC has been, it’s unsurprising that CDPR’s own are following Miquella’s trail. Our friends over at PCGamesN gave the expansion a commendable 9/10, saying that it “sits proudly among the best videogame expansions of all time thanks to its sense of adventure, epic boss battles, and ambitious new additions.” Banger.
