FromSoftware has today reported some impressive sales figures for Elden Ring, claiming the incredibly popular open-world action RPG has sold 12 million copies worldwide. In its celebratory press release, however, the Japanese studio hints that as a result of the game’s success, it is looking to expand the IP “beyond the realm of games.”
While FromSoftware doesn’t delve into any more detail than that, all you’ve got to do is look at the recent activities of Halo, League of Legends, Dota 2, Sonic, Mario, Uncharted, Cyberpunk, Fallout, Borderlands, Bioshock, The Witcher, Call of Duty, and many other popular franchises (draws breath) to figure out what this probably means. An Elden Ring TV show or movie? It’s got to be, right? Or maybe it’ll get its own George R.R. Martin book, who knows?
“Please look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in hopes of expanding beyond the realm of games,” FromSoftware says in its press release.
In regards to the 12 million sales figure, FromSoftware confirms this number is calculated by combining the actual digital downloads of the game and the distribution figures of the physical version of Elden Ring to retailers.
While no one is particularly shocked that Elden Ring has been a storming success, you can’t help but be impressed by numbers that big. Plus, it’s heartening to know that 11,999,999 other gamers have shared our struggle with infuriating Elden Ring bosses.
