The NRG CS:GO roster has been acquired by esports organisation Evil Geniuses hours before the ESL One New York tournament was about to begin.

EG have had a lengthy absence from CS:GO after shutting down operations in 2012 and will face FaZe Clan later today, September 26, in what will be their first competitive match in over seven years. The talented roster recently reached the semi-finals of the StarLadder Major in Berlin where they were halted by eventual champions Astralis.

In a Twitter announcement, EG said: “After seven long years, Evil Geniuses will be returning to our Counter-Strike roots. A big thanks to NRG for helping make it happen in time for #ESLOne NYC this weekend.” The sentiment was echoed by roster captain Peter ‘Stanislaw’ Jarguz, who tweeted: “Ecstatic to be joining EG. We’ll be repping the Blue at ESL NY; can’t wait to get started under this legendary brand. Let’s go!”

Considered one of the top teams in North American CS:GO, the ex-NRG team will give Evil Geniuses a good shot at early success.

In a press release, they said that there were multiple options on the table for them to reentre CS:GO.

“Over the last several months, we have spent considerable time exploring opportunities to re-enter CS,” it reads. “This has varied from considering building a team from scratch to venturing outside North America entirely. However, when NRG’s lineup began assessing their options, we knew that this talented roster would make an amazing fit for EG.”
