Starfield was released back in 2023 to the disappointment of many with complaints of fragmented exploration, repetitive POI's, soulless NPC'S and a bland main story. The developers took it in stride however, and it has been getting new content and quality of life change on a regular basis ever since.all of this work has clearly paid off with it having a metacritic score of 83 now. As of April 7th Starfield is getting a new update called Free Lanes which is the biggest since launch as well as a DLC that fleshes out the impact of the colony war in more detail.
Free Lanes added a number of new features and chief among them is the implementation of a new material called X-Tech. It allows you to reroll legendary modifiers, unlock a new legendary rank and increase the quality level of your gun to superior and exceptional tiers instead of needing to find a different version of the gun as was the case previously. X-Tech also allows for further ship upgrades including new modules with unique abilities and to optimize individual ship systems as shifting situations call for.
Another major complaint that is trying to be solved by this update is how fractured the parts of the universe are and how moving your ship and your materials requires too many loading screens. To address this your ship can now be put into cruise mode allowing for seamless travel between worlds. As for the supply chain issues there are now shared containers to facilitate faster movement of resources and an in-game database that tracks recipes, resource locations and favored locations.
Another new feature designed to tackle an old issue is the addition of quantum essence to new games. Previously you couldn't upgrade your starborn powers until progressing to the New Game Plys which has now been changed. The final big change is the addition of new side quests, POI's, new spaceships and a new land vehicle. This is all done to combat how empty many planets are.
Time for the other addition, the Terran Armada paid DLC. While not much is currently known about it the premise is that a fleet that went missing during the colony wars is now returning from a far away galaxy with a robot army with the goal of reuniting the united colonies and freestar collective by force.
Now I have always been a big Starfield fan even with its shortcomings so I would wholeheartedly recommend giving Starfield a try. Having said that, if you have already played it and didn't enjoy it, I don't think these updates will change it enough for you to suddenly love the game.
