The best crossplay games 2024 for PS5 and Xbox players

Being cross-platform is a must for any multiplayer experience these days, and here are the best crossplay games for PlayStation and Xbox gamers.

What are the best crossplay games? Cross-platform games were once a luxury, but now any self-respecting multiplayer game has to come with crossplay. The days of PlayStation and Xbox gamers being caged in separate player pools is pretty much over, and we’re here to highlight the best crossplay games that you can play with friends on other devices.

As well as bridging the gap between Xbox and PlayStation players, a lot of these games also feature crossplay between PC, Nintendo Switch, and even mobile. There will of course be some PS5 exclusives and Xbox exclusives on this list that aren’t available on both the blue and green side of the divide, due to their specific platform deals. However, with some of the best games of all time featuring, you’re bound to find something new to play with your pals on other platforms.

The best crossplay games are:

1. War Thunder

If you love free shooting games where you battle against other players within the comfort of combat vehicles, then War Thunder will be the game for you. You can choose whether you want to fight on land, in the air, or at sea, in a tank, plane, or warship respectively. With a long list of maps to choose from (all of which draw from different real-world locations), you’ll find that this is a game that never falls flat when it comes to variety – which is impressive given that’s free.

Avid readers will probably notice that War Thunder was also featured on our list of the best free Xbox games. If you’re after something that’ll give you easy access to online chaos whenever you want to blow off steam, you can’t go wrong with this game.

War Thunder supports crossplay across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

2. Enlisted

World War 2 has been the setting of many an FPS game over the years, and there are few quite so good as Enlisted. While a lot of shooters put the emphasis on blasting your foes away with brute force, this is a decidedly more strategic experience. There are no single-person armies here and this game sees you put in control of a whole squadron.

The soldiers aren’t all exactly the same either, with each of them having different classes and abilities. This means that you have to think carefully about which soldiers you deploy in which areas, and as each of them has unique abilities, it facilitates many different types of gameplay. There are a number of different maps too (based on the location of real skirmishes) and you’ll find that you cultivate different tactics for each of them, with your strategic thought processes sculpting the way that you approach any given problem.

Enlisted supports crossplay on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

3. World of Warships

Do you fancy taking to the high seas and doing battle with warships across the world’s oceans? Well then give World of Warships a try. This free-to-play online game gives you a selection of beautiful arenas based on real-world locales, where you can take control of warships drawn from throughout history. This includes a number of different countries, allowing for you to build a wonderfully diverse armada.

The cross-play situation for this game is a bit complicated. It’s available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a version called World of Warship: Blitz on Android and iOS. You can have a single account that you use across all versions, but there are technically three different games. The PC one doesn’t really allow for crossplay, but players on Xbox or PlayStation consoles can play against each other, while those with the Blitz version of the game can enjoy crossplay across Android and iOS. Whichever version of the game you play, you’re sure to have a good time.

4. Genshin Impact

Drawing a lot of inspiration from the seminal The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Genshin Impact is a stellar free-to-play RPG, giving you a chance to explore a vibrant open world with a group of friends.

When you’re playing alone, you form a party of four characters, each of which you can switch to on the fly to combo abilities and elemental reactions. Well, with up to four player co-op – across PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile, thanks to crossplay – each player controls one character each. There’s nothing else quite like grinding to level up characters with friends so that you can absolutely unload on a boss to beat your own DPS record.

While you unfortunately can’t complete the main story quests alongside friends, you’ll be able to explore the beautiful and diverse open world, search for treasure, complete side quests, hunt bosses, and more. You can even invite them to your house inside a teapot to show off your home design skills!

Given how long it can take to level up characters, and the gacha Genshin Impact banner system, we recommend keeping up to date with the latest Genshin Impact codes when you dive into the world of Teyvat.

Genshin Impact supports crossplay across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Android, and iOS. The game is yet to come to Xbox consoles.

Best crossplay games: A player reloading a peach-colored SMG in Call of Duty MW3.

5. Call of Duty MW3

The premier multiplayer FPS game returns once again with one of the best entries in recent years – Call of Duty MW3. Sure, the single-player campaign is pretty weak, but the MW3 multiplayer and MW3 Zombies experience is strong. We talk about this more in our MW3 review if you’re keen to learn more.

With changes to the movement system to speed things up compared to MW2 (2022), a new MW3 Aftermarket Parts feature, as well as a suite of classic remasters in the MW3 maps and the largest arsenal in any CoD with the MW3 guns list, there’s so much for you to enjoy in the multiplayer modes. Oh, and how could we forget the MW3 camo grind? You can beat racing your friends to be first to unlock all the Mastery camos to flex your skills.

It’s the silky smooth and incredibly impactful gameplay you’d expect from the long-standing series, amped up to 11 to provide almost everything you could ask for. The post-launch Seasons take this even further, adding even more maps, guns, and modes into the mix so you and your mates are never left without something to do.

That’s before even sinking your teeth into the Zombies mode, a first for the Modern Warfare line of CoD games. While its open-world structure won’t be to everyone’s liking, we’ve never had such a large and complex Zombies mode in CoD before. You can team up with other players to complete missions, take down bosses, and collect all the loot you can before escaping from the Zombie-infested Urzikstan. It’s not quite the captivating round-based challenge of the traditional mode, but it is nonetheless an interesting spin on the mode that’s a great time with friends.

Thinking of braving the eerie Zombies mode or competitive PvP action? Check out the MW3 meta for a low-down on all the gear you should be using to stay on top, such as the best MW3 loadouts and MW3 best guns. You can then show off to your friends with your newfound knowledge.

Call of Duty MW3 features crossplay between PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms in all multiplayer and Zombies modes. So long as you use the same Activision account, it also has full cross-progression too.

Best crossplay games: Revenant holding Bloodhound in the air against a backdrop of a planet in Apex Legends.

6. Apex Legends

Respawn’s Apex Legends isn’t just one of the best Xbox FPS games or best PS5 FPS games, it’s also one of the best crossplay games. While it still prides itself on being a thrilling and competitive battler royale game with a diverse roster of playable characters, Apex is now much more than that.

The Mixtape playlist is a constant revolving door of spin-off game modes that are there to give you a breather from the battle royale action. You can dive into the likes of 6v6 Team Deathmatch, 9v9 Control, or Gun Run (which is essentially Gun Game from the Call of Duty series).

The game’s seasonal updates also routinely introduce new legends, maps, weapons, and limited-time events to keep things constantly fresh.

Check out our Apex Legends tier list to get started, especially if you and your friends are looking to play competitively and climb the Apex Legends ranks.

Apex Legends crossplay connects players across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Switch.

Best crossplay games: A group of blocky characters sitting around a campfire at night in Minecraft.

7. Minecraft

Of all the games on this list, nothing quite captures the spirit of crossplay quite so well as Minecraft. With a huge number of playable skins available, this is the only game where you’ll see Mario and Donkey Kong working together with Master Chief, Banjo and Kazooie, Sackboy, and Spider-Man in order to create something beautiful (though Fortnite gets close). The image of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo fans working cooperatively on unique Minecraft house ideas is a moving one – maybe world peace is still within our grasp.

Since its release way back in 2011, Minecraft has always been focused on giving players the chance to create something amazing – while at the same time providing a solid survival game experience too. Whether you prefer the creative or survivalist elements of the game, there are so many ways to play, and if you’ve never played it before, we recommend you read our guide on how to download Minecraft so that you can get started right away. It’s hard to deny that it’s one of the best games of all time.

Minecraft supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Best crossplay games: A pirate holding a glowing blue sword in Sea of Thieves.

8. Sea of Thieves

Developer Rare has a number of absolutely incredible games under its belt and it says a lot about Sea of Thieves that it has been the most successful of them all. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into a sprawling pirate adventure with an enormous ocean to explore, filled with tropical islands just waiting for a treasure hunter like you to come along, then this is definitely one to check out.

The game has a story mode that you and a team of friends can progress through, but you can also have just as much fun getting into hijinks at your own pace. One of the game’s biggest strengths is that its world is absolutely enchanting – you won’t want to leave it. Once you set sail with your friends, we can almost guarantee that you’ll find yourself wondering how the last twenty minutes ended up filling four hours.

While it began its life as an Xbox exclusive and one of the best Game Pass games around, the game has now set sail for PlayStation platforms too, making crossplay all the more important.

Sea of Thieves supports crossplay across PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

Best crossplay games: A menacing character in armour in front of a planet in Final Fantasy XIV.

9. Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV is one of the best PS5 RPG games (and soon to be one of the best Xbox RPG games too). Aside from a brief MMO dalliance in Final Fantasy XI, the series was largely known for offering top-notch single-player experiences, but for the fourteenth installment, Square Enix decided to give that whole online thing another go – and while it was initially a huge failure, Final Fantasy XIV as it exists today is an incredible MMORPG that takes the series in a completely new direction while remaining true to the past.

In the world of Eorzea, there are monsters to battle and dungeons to crawl, but you could also sit back and do a bit of fishing, or spend time running errands for townspeople. This is a game you can play at your own pace, and what makes it even more appealing is the fact that you can start for free and play an enormous chunk of the game without paying a thing. This also makes it great for you and your friends to jump in and try it out before inevitably getting dragged in like the rest of us.

While the game spent many years as a PlayStation console exclusive, in 2024 it finally made the jump across to Xbox consoles too.

Final Fantasy XIV supports crossplay between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Best crossplay games: Geralt of Rivia out on the battlefield during a game of Fortnite.

10. Fortnite

Like Minecraft, Fortnite does an excellent job of reflecting the spirit of crossplay, because it’s a game where you’ll encounter the likes of Halo’s Master Chief and Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy shooting it out (or building a shelter together) on the battlefield (although, sadly, characters from Nintendo’s stable of IPs are yet to make an appearance).

This is such a well-known game, and it’s even gone on to inspire a number of other games like Fortnite, and it’s arguably still the best battle royale game too. Still, if you are unfamiliar with it, let us explain: you parachute onto a large island with 100 other players and you have to shoot it out until only one of you is left. As the numbers dwindle, things get pretty intense, and if you find yourself getting killed within the final ten, you’ll end up going back again and again until you win. It’s easy to see how it’s cultivated such a following. Check out our Fortnite VPN guide if you’re worried you’re losing because of connection-based reasons.

And for those of you looking to avoid competing in a 100-player last-man-standing competition, Fortnite now offers three new games within its ‘hub’, called LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival, each tackling various genres like racing or survival.

Fortnite supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Best crossplay games: A car driving away from an explosion on a football pitch in Rocket League.

11. Rocket League

We like to imagine that one day someone at Psyonix was playing FIFA when they thought to themselves: “This would be much more fun if I was driving a car”, and so created Rocket League. In reality, it was an evolution of their earlier game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, but we think that paints a nice picture.

As you can imagine, this is a game that’s all about speedily driving along on a football pitch and trying to score goals with the giant ball that’s rolling around there. Whether you’re someone who wants to make their way up the Rocket League ranks, or more of a casual player, this is a game that appeals to all demographics. While it is by no means high concept, it gives that satisfying type of entertainment that videogames do best – those Rocket League cars are just fun to control, and it’s easy to spend hours with them.

Rocket League supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Best crossplay games: An image showing text saying "Crewmate, there are 2 imposters among us." and there are a number of Among Us characters standing beneath the words.

12. Among Us

While Among Us slipped under the radar when it was initially released in 2018, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it into the spotlight in a big way, and now those sussy Among Us characters are some of the most recognizable figures in videogame history. With a unique element of social deduction in its gameplay and a charming art style, it’s managed to win hearts around the world.

We already have a guide on Among Us crossplay for anyone who isn’t exactly sure how it works. Basically, though, it’s really easy to jump into a spaceship with a bunch of friends on different devices and then have a lot of fun trying to figure out who among you is a murderer. It’s really cheap (or even free) on most devices, so if you’ve not yet tried it, there’s very little to stop you from doing so.

Among Us supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.

Best crossplay games: Caitl holding a hammer over her head in triumph in Destiny 2.

13. Destiny 2

After making a name for itself in the Halo franchise, Bungie’s magnum opus is certainly Destiny 2. Since its release in 2017, Destiny 2 has been consistently updated and expanded, with new PvE storylines that can be enjoyed either alone, with friends, or with random players, and PvP modes that scratch the competitive itch.

From exploring beautiful, otherworldly landscapes with your friends, to gunning down all-powerful alien bosses with some of the best Destiny 2 weapons, there’s so much on offer in Destiny and it only gets better with friends. You can change perfect weapon rolls together, wipe out other players in PvP, experience a rich story and world, or take on some of the most challenging and intricately designed content in the industry – raids and dungeons. There’s nothing else quite like Destiny 2, especially for consoles where MMOs are incredibly rare even today.

With the upcoming Destiny 2 The Final Shape expansion, there’s even more on the horizon, including brand new The Final Shape Supers and The Final Shape Exotic weapons.

If you’re diving in with your friends, check out the best Destiny 2 Hunter build, Destiny 2 Titan build, and Destiny 2 Warlock build for fun setups for each one.

Destiny 2 supports crossplay across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Best crossplay games: A character running across the battlefield holding a sword in Call of Duty Warzone.

14. Call of Duty Warzone

If you’ve ever wanted to see the grittier style and gameplay of the Call of Duty series combined with the chaotic battle royal mechanics of Fortnite, then you’ll love Warzone. Although the ‘2’ in its name has been dropped, this is a sequel that builds on the successful foundations of the original. Warzone has a handful of fantastic maps, from Al Mazrah to Vondel, and these battlefields make for some pretty intense matches.

This is one of the more competitive games on this list, so if you want any guidance on getting started in the game, we recommend you keep up to date on the Warzone meta and read our article on the best Warzone loadouts, and our Warzone VPN guide will help you to get easier lobbies as well. Either way, if you want to lose yourself in an intense online multiplayer game, this is the one to go for.

Call of Duty: Warzone supports crossplay across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Best crossplay games: The heroes from Borderlands 3 standing firing at encroaching enemies.

15. Borderlands 3

The Borderlands series has always been an amazing multiplayer co-op experience, but Borderlands 3 kicked that up a notch not just with upgrades to the core gameplay, but also the addition of crossplay. Borderlands 2 is one of our favorite and most-played games of all time, though Borderlands 3 is an improvement in nearly every aspect.

With four Vault Hunters to choose from, you and your crew of up to four players can all work together to wipe out enemies and bosses in search of precious, precious loot in this action RPG. In fact, it’s this chase of perfect weapons and gear to make an absurd build that’s always been so captivating about the series, so it’s great to be able to do it alongside others, no matter where they play.

It’s not all about the loot though, as there’s an entertaining story and diverse locations to explore, each jam-packed with side quests and activities to speed through guns blazing.

Borderlands 3 crossplay allows PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players to play together.

Best crossplay games: Four astronauts looking at a diamond-shaped object in No Man's Sky

16. No Man’s Sky

While it may have had a rocky launch that would’ve left most games struggling to escape the atmosphere, No Man’s Sky’s massive universe is now brimming with incredible content as well as now being playable with friends in multiplayer.

In No Man’s Sky, you’ll find yourself on a galaxy-hopping survival adventure as you not only use resources and tech to survive dangerous environments but also uncover the mysteries of the universe. However, there’s also base-building, surface vehicles, and more content than ever before.

The universe is a fairly lonely place, especially with No Man’s Sky’s 18 quintillion planets to explore, so having friends in crossplay makes the experience much more manageable, and certainly less daunting.

No Man’s Sky crossplay connects PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch (albeit in a very limited fashion compared to other platforms).

Best crossplay games: a Dead by Daylight killer with sharp teeth and a skeletal face

17. Dead by Daylight

One of the best horror games, and a multiplayer one at that, Dead by Daylight sees you play as either a survivor with three friends, or a terrifying killer stalking their prey. From iconic horror mascots like Ghostface to original characters that are brutal and terrifying, Dead by Daylight is sure to give you a good ol’ fright, or let you become the terror.

There’s no real end to Dead by Daylight, offering countless hours of incredibly fun gameplay that can change depending on which survivor or killer you decide to play as. And as you play, you can unlock upgrades that can change things up.

If you’ve been looking for something that isn’t a competitive shooter or a party game, the horrors of Dead by Daylight should entice you.

Dead By Daylight crossplay spans across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Best crossplay games: Overwatch 2

18. Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 had a rough start to life, with the sequel to Blizzard’s iconic hero launching without its promised PvE element – something which was later scrapped entirely by the studio. Despite having little goodwill among the community right out of the gate, Blizz has slowly but surely managed to claw things back.

The developer has completely revitalized the ranked experience, while tuning hero health pools and projectile sizes to make for a more satisfying time in-game. While PvE did get binned, there is still a massive commitment from Blizzard on adding new PvP content like new heroes to the game.

Despite its fair share of controversies, Overwatch 2 remains the hallmark for hero shooters and can be enjoyed for free across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. There’s also full crossplay support, allowing you to stack up with your pals across platforms.

Best crossplay games: a Back 4 Blood character wearing a tactical vest and firing a rifle

19. Back 4 Blood

The spiritual successor to the iconic Left 4 Dead series, Back 4 Blood is one of the best zombie-smashing shooters out there. Though it didn’t quite match the critical success of its predecessor, there’s still plenty to love about Back 4 Blood’s gameplay – itself almost identical to Left 4 Dead’s.

But it’s not quite a copy-paste job, with developer Turtle Rock adding in a roguelike card system that keeps every playthrough fresh. If you’re after replayability, Back 4 Blood has it. For our critical thoughts on the game, check out our 8/10 Back 4 Blood review.

Its player population isn’t what it once was, but that doesn’t matter if you’re looking to party up with pals. Back 4 Blood can often be found on generous sales, offering up one of the best ways to kill time with your homies for a pittance.

Back 4 Blood crossplay spans PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, and PC.

Best crossplay games: A team of Helldivers soldiers wearing dark grey armor and capes, stand on a rock with yellow smoke behind them

20. Helldivers 2

With its hammed-up fight for galactic democracy, a massive arsenal of ridiculously-powerful weapons, and an ever-evolving storyline driven by the community, Helldivers 2 might go down as one of the greatest co-op experiences of the decade.

No one expected it to be quite so good (and popular) when it launched in 2024, but Arrowhead Game Studios’ third-person shooter is an absolute masterclass in creating co-op chaos. From calling in air strikes on hordes of Automatons to blasting bugs with a railgun, it’s impossible for Helldivers 2 not to put a smile on your face.

The game also receives regular, spontaneous, and often-sneaky drops of new content. While there are monthly Warbonds – paid battle pass-style updates that bring new weapons and gear – don’t be surprised to log in on a random Tuesday afternoon and find that a brand new enemy, weather event, or some other type of content has been slid into the game without anyone noticing.

Sadly for Xbox players, the game is a PlayStation console exclusive as things stand. However, Helldivers 2 does support crossplay between PS5 and PC, with both communities able to contribute towards Super Earth’s global objectives.

That covers all the best crossplay games to play right now with your crew, from action-packed FPS games to immersive RPGs. For more gaming recommendations that offer great multiplayer experiences, check out the best multiplayer games on consoles.

While crossplay makes the aptly-named ‘console war’ even less important, it is worth checking out the best gaming console, as there are still advantages to certain systems that make them worth picking over others, even if you can play many games together. Likewise, there’s no better way to improve your experience than to have the best gaming TV as the centerpiece of your setup.
